OBJECTIVE:

Getting the ball off the ground.

EQUIPMENT:

Four balls per group.

GROUP SIZE:

8+.

AREA:

10m x 10m.

DRILL EXPLANATION:

  1. Players are paired up and placed on each corner of the grid with a ball about 1-2m in front of them.
  2. On the coach's signal each pair runs to the opposite corner of the grid.
  3. The player arriving then “baseball” slides on the ball, gets to their feet and the second quickly comes into secure and drive.
  4. Each pair drives in a controlled manner to the centre of the grid making contact with the other players doing the same.
  5. Pairs make contact in the congested grid centre and either continue to drive through the middle or roll off other pairs on their return to the starting cones.

COACHING POINTS:

• Players sliding onto the ball must get to their feet as quickly as they can.
• Control the ball.
• Support player should go around and come in directly behind the player in contact.

VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:

  1. Vary by different ways of picking up the ball.
  2. Use in tackle situation (turnover).
