OBJECTIVE:

To throw in the ball accurately.

EQUIPMENT:

One ball, four cones and one post.

GROUP SIZE:

1–2 players.

AREA:

5m x 20m.

DRILL SET-UP:

Hooker to stand on try-line facing the goalposts. Use cones to space out the distance of each throw as shown in the diagram.

DRILL EXPLANATION:

  1. Aim to hit the upright at various heights.
  2. The thrower needs to progressively set targets at practice, e.g. three in a row, five in a row, and 10 in a row at each distance.
  3. Thrower should begin practising with jumpers once the throwing action and targets have been performed to a suitable standard.

COACHING POINTS:

The skill of throwing, while unique to each individual, should, to be successful, demonstrate the following key factors:
• Fingers spread on the ball.
• Ball held directly above the head.
• Push elbows forward.
• Power to come from wrist and forearm.
• Follow through.
