OBJECTIVE:

To vary the distances thrown into a lineout.

EQUIPMENT:

12 cones, four balls.

GROUP SIZE:

Throwers and lineout jumpers.

AREA:

20m x 15m.

DRILL SET-UP:

Diagram.

DRILL EXPLANATION:

  1. Use cones to mark position of jumper.
  2. Ball placed at 5m intervals.
  3. Player to progress from ball to ball.
  4. Jumper to progressively take throw at 7m, 9m and 11m.

COACHING POINTS:

• Throwing to be accurate.
• Create space.
• Space is created by out-manoeuvring opponents before the throw is made i.e. by moving back, the opposition is drawn back, creating space in front; by moving forward, space is created behind.
• Move into the space on the throw so that the jump is vertical.
• Adjust arm position to prevent opponents blocking arm movement.
• Two-foot take off ideal for timing, i.e. one-foot forwards, stop together, then up.
• Drive up towards the ball by starting low and driving up with arms.

VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:

  1. Introduce all/more jumpers.
  2. Use team lineout calls.
  3. Jumpers to vary deliveries to halfback.
