OBJECTIVE:

Throwing the ball accurately and taking a ball above the head.

EQUIPMENT:

One ball per group.

GROUP SIZE:

4–8 players.

AREA:

10m x 5m.

DRILL SET-UP:

The hooker stands on the touchline with the ball. The rest of the group line up single file, several metres behind the 5-metre line.

DRILL EXPLANATION:

  1. One at a time, the front person runs forwards and jumps up and across to catch the hooker's throw.
  2. Upon catching the throw, the jumper returns the ball to the thrower and then joins the end of the line.
  3. The new front player runs forward and repeats the process.

COACHING POINTS:

• Jumpers should:
- have inside shoulder forward and inside the line of the ball so the face is directly behind the ball.
- prepare for jump with hands at chest level.
- concentrate on jumping through with the chest forward and head up.
• Arms should not be extended until the jumper reaches the top of the jump.
• The jumper jumps with hands at face height and adjusts arms to meet the ball.

VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:

If movement is too much for basic drill, start with standing, then extend with one or two steps.
