OBJECTIVE:

Improve communication in defensive roles.

EQUIPMENT:

One hit shield per attacker.

GROUP SIZE:

DRILL EXPLANATION:

  1. Split group in half, with one half as attackers holding shields and the other half as defenders.
  2. Coach stands behind defending group to direct attackers with arm signals.
  3. Defenders nominate their opponent clearly and move laterally mirroring opponents' movements.
  4. On the coach's "Go" the defending group will move up as a line and drive their opposite back.

COACHING POINTS:

• Players must SIGNAL who their opposite is.
• Contact should be strong and low with good leg drive forcing the player up.

VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:

  1. Ball-carrier moving behind attack line and enters through line so defence adjusts accordingly.
