Understanding drift defence.

EQUIPMENT:

Four cones, two balls.

GROUP SIZE:

Eight or more.

AREA:

10m x 20m.

DRILL SET-UP:

As in diagram.

DRILL EXPLANATION:

  1. Attackers try to score on the other side.
  2. Defenders must attempt to stop them, using drift defence.
  3. Once they score, or are stopped, then the other attackers start with defenders shifting to opposite end of rectangle, hence continuous drifting.

COACHING POINTS:

• Stay inside defenders.
• Communication is a key.
• Keep trusting inside defender.

VARIATIONS/PROGRESSION:

  1. Flanker or player inside.
  2. Defender on knees cleaning up inside.
