OBJECTIVE:

Improve techniques in ripping the ball off an opponent.

EQUIPMENT:

Ball.

GROUP SIZE:

6-10.

AREA:

8 x 8 metre grid.

DRILL EXPLANATION:

  1. Two players start with the ball and the rest form a close circle around them.
  2. The player in possession runs into any one of the defenders, drives and sets.
  3. The supporting player drives shoulder and upper arm into the ball-carrier and twists down to rip the ball whilst driving with the legs.
  4. Players in the defending team keep close at all times.
  5. The “ripper” rolls off and drives into another defender, with the original ball-carrier becoming the ripper.

COACHING POINTS:

• Correct techniques are to be used at all times.
• Speed, this is a fitness activity as well.
• Low body height should be maintained at all times.
• Defenders should stop attackers pushing them back at all times.

VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:

  1. More support players and defenders.
  2. Not in a circle.
