OBJECTIVE:

To maintain ball control under pressure.

EQUIPMENT:

Four balls, tackle suits, cones.

GROUP SIZE:

Groups of 5–6 players.

AREA:

10m x 10m.

DRILL EXPLANATION:

  1. An attacker picks ball up and drives towards the target (centre of grid).
  2. When the player meets the suits (defenders), a maul is formed.
  3. When the coach is satisfied that the maul is moving forward and the control is good, they signal “break” and the forwards go around the cone and pick up ball 2 and repeat the drill.
  4. Four repetitions are completed.

COACHING POINTS:

• Body position.
• Not getting isolated.
• Communication.

VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:

Instead of suits, use hit shields.
