OBJECTIVE:

To retain possession while engaging opposition. To set an effective target for supporting players or utilize options created by support players.

KEY FACTORS:

  1. Look to penetrate either side of opposition first.
  2. Focus on contact area.
  3. Chin off chest; eyes open.
  4. Low body position.
  5. Ball in two hands, away from contact.
  6. Small steps on approach.
  7. Wide “power step” into contact.
  8. Plant front foot close to defender's feet.
  9. Body before ball.
  10. Contact side-on with hard parts of body; jack up on contact.
  11. Maintain low stable base, chin up, eyes open.
  12. Hold ball in close at hip height.
  13. Brace for impact (from defence and support).
  14. Transfer ball after initial contact and forward movement.

COMMON ERRORS:

  1. Head down; eyes closed.
  2. Leading with ball.
  3. Too upright.
  4. Narrow base of support.
  5. Front foot planted too far from defender's feet – easily taken to ground.
  6. Shoulders below hips.
  7. Holding ball in one hand.
  8. Ball-carrier failing to turn and give support a target to drive on.
  9. Holding ball too high means support cannot effectively drive on.
