First Things First

The NZ Rugby welcomes parents to its programme for Small Blacks players and their families.

It is really important for parents to have an understanding of their child's rugby family so that they can share in their child's experience and enjoyment. Parents play a vital part in creating the quality, enjoyable and safe family environment that exists in a Small Blacks environment. So why not harness and nurture parents into roles for their child's team?

Parents are encouraged to become energetically involved in this programme. Previous rugby experience is not required - just a willingness to help out a bit.

Our Values:

  • Love for the game: enjoyment and participation
  • Sportsmanship: honesty and integrity
  • Excellence: striving and achieving
  • Selflessness: team before individual
  • Mateship: making lifelong friends
  • Community: valuing and supporting our people
  • Guardianship: respecting our heritage

How does my team make a Small Blacks Charter?

  • Team can use NZ RUGBY Small Blacks’ charter or make one of their own. (Signed by coach, parents and kids.) You can download these from online – two versions– one created by NZ RUGBY or one you can adapt to individual team needs.

How do we do this?

As coach, take the initiative and set up a meeting with ALL parents.

What is a team charter?

A charter is a document that describes the purpose, boundaries and agreements of the team. It can be created for a team or co-created by whoever is involved in the team.
What is Included?
Team charters should address the following areas and answer the related questions.
•    Goals and Expectations – What are the specific goals for this team?
•    Approach – What are the behavioural norms or ground rules that the team will agree to?
•    Skills and expertise required – Make a list of the skills that will be required for team success.
•    Agreement – Once all of these questions and items have been documented, your charter should be signed by the team, coach and parents. This will cement the agreement and ensures that every team member understands and accepts ownership of the complete charter.

Why?

You are the person giving up to twenty weeks of your time coaching their kid – so surely they can meet the coach and other parents at least once.
Run a parents evening or session for ALL parents whose kids are involved in the rugby team. (Maybe the first week of the rugby draw is a ‘Family Affair’ with this programme as one component of the session.)
